The two lead characters are women (Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth), they write to each other throughout the movie, discussing politics, the succession of the throne of England, Elizabeth being the godmother of Mary's son and more. When they meet face to face they talk about each other mostly, and their political situation and the struggles of being a female ruler which only they can understand.
