(Spoilers) None of the characters are explicitly named which is why i give the film it's first point, but there's only 3 conversations between the main 2 females in the film. Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfieffer talk about J-Law's sex life and why her and her husband haven't had a child yet, going into the husbands study and losing a child which in the films case is an adult man.

The movie passed all three tests, and none of the characters are named. Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer had a conversation at one point about the house I believe it was.

(spoilers) at her sons funeral, michelle pfeiffer and jlaw talk about motherhood and what it means; the conversation goes deeper than just mourning the son. the conversation ends with pfeiffer angrily telling jlaw to change her outfit.

This movie passes, michelle pfiefers charcter “Woman” and Jennifer Lawrence “mother” talk about decorating, and the drink that Michelle has made for Jennifer. The characters do have names, they are just generic names in keeping with the films motifs. Kristin wiig also has a conversation with Jennifer about where she has been

It passes. No characters are given names (including men), Michelle and Jennifer talk about redorcating in one scene, the struggles of motherhood in another, and Jennifer and Kristen Wiig talk about a poem together.

It does pass all criteria. I believe that the [named] aspect should be overlooked here, because there are NO named characters in the movie. I understand that naming as a point of consideration should always come when it exists in opposition to named characters.

I disagree with the rating. As someone who is currently writing their thesis over mother!, I believe there are several instances where it does pass the Bechdel test, and it does not require a careful analysis to see these instances. Mother and Woman have conversations about the nature of femininity and creation, as well as Mother and some other unnamed characters in the film.

I think we can agree that MOTHER DAUGHTER can be seen as names. It is dubious, though, that WOMAN should have a name and does not introduce herself. So we have two female characters that talk to each other exclusively not about men.

There is only one question left: should a female robot AI be seen as female, just because ITS name is MOTHER?

As for WOMAN I do agree that she has no name and should not be taken into account for any conversation (for the "named" criteria).

I'd opt for

- 2 named females having conversation - no, MOTHER is not a woman, WOMAN is not named
- having conversations - yes
- about sth else than men - yes
