I don't remember it being explicitly mentioned in this part, but Maurice is clearly male. The fact that he was in a caring role and was voiced by a female voice actor probably misled you.

We apologise (we're 'not is wrong') since we posted the comment regarding the gender of Maurice the Wiki has been changed, it distinctly said he was female but now it states male. This was most likely because the actress playing Maurice is female.
